Kilometers Morales refers to a series of memes featuring Miles Morales Name Puns in which the Spider-Man spin-off character Miles Morales has his name reimagined as different measurements of distance used around the world, due to his first name being a homophone for the measurement “miles.” The most widespread variant of these puns is Kilometers Morales, who’s viewed in memes as the European counterpart to the American version, but others have been created with more outlandish nicknames since they appeared and spread across several sites and platforms from 2018 to 2020.

Origin

Although the exact first use of Kilometers Morales is unknown, it appears online as early as 2018. One such example was posted to 9GAG^[1] on January 24th, 2018, under the title “1.60934 kilometers to be exact.” The meme received 39 points and four comments in just under three years (shown below).

Spread

The format continued to spread in the following years, seeing a notable resurgence after the PlayStation 5 game bearing Miles Morales’ name was announced and released in 2020. On October 25th, 2020, iFunny^[2] user memes7331 posted a version using the pun to the site (seen below, left). On November 2nd, Redditor TheUnepicGamer posted another variant to the /r/dankmemes^[3] subreddit, receiving over 21,500 upvotes, 68 comments and several Reddit awards in 13 days (seen below, right).

On November 13th, Twitter^[4] user IanWhyNot tweeted a reference to the pun, receiving over 368 likes and 42 retweets in three days (seen below).

On November 14th, Instagram^[5] user the.corn.guy posted a meme referencing Europeans expressing frustration over Miles name, which accumulated over 1,240 likes in roughly 48 hours (shown below, left). On November 16th, the Facebook^[6] page American Memes posted another version with an edited promotional image of the upcoming PS5 game, accumulating over 1,600 likes, 234 shares and 75 comments in five hours (shown below, right).
