Kratos vs. Sun Wukong refers to a viral debate about who would win in a fight between the character Kratos from the God of War video game franchise and Sun Wukong (aka the Monkey King) from the Black Myth: Wukong game. After the success of Black Myth: Wukong in August 2024, various internet users began posting memes and jokes about how Wukong may outpower Kratos or the lore-accurate ways in which Wukong can be defeated.

Origin

Discussions about whether Kratos from God of War could defeat Sun Wukong from the video game Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by the Chinese myth Journey to the West, can be traced as far back as May 10th, 2018, when Redditor /u/RiceandBeansandChees posed the question to the subreddit /r/GodofWar.^[1] The post highlighted that Goku from Dragon Ball Z was inspired by Sun Wukong.

However, the first notable instance of the question being posed to viral effect is a post by X^[2] / Twitter user @BasedPota18, who wrote, "They confirmed that every mythology exists in God of War’s universe. Soooooo if Kratos or Atreus headed to China, they could run into Sun Wukong right?" on May 6th, 2023.

Also on May 6th, the post received a response from X^[3] user @RedLReviews, who wrote, "Sun Wukong might legitimately be the first God that Kratos straight up cannot defeat at all." The thread was reposted to Reddit's /r/NonPoliticalTwitter,^[4] where it gathered over 6,000 upvotes in a year.

Discussions about whether or not Kratos could defeat Sun Wukong continued after the release of Black Myth: Wukong in August 2024, after more internet users learned the details of Sun Wukong's lore and immortality. On August 24th, 2024, X^[5] user @AryanXVII_ asked, "Wukong vs Kratos Who wins???" gathering over 30,000 likes in three days. The post received quote replies from various people describing the ways in which Wukong could defeat Kratos.

X^[6] user @Woody3930 quoted the post on August 24th, 2024, writing, "Kratos is gonna rip and maul Wukong for two weeks straight with every weapon and technique he has full spartan rage, full bloodlust Then the camera’s gonna zoom out and Wukong is gonna point at him and say 'glad I'm not that guy.'" The post gathered over 94,000 likes in three days.

Shortly after, X^[7] user @doodadoodles drew a comic based on the aforementioned post, gathering over 40,000 likes in a similar timeframe.

Also on August 24th, X^[8] user @LuckiiSonoda wrote, "'Atreus, did we beat Sun Wukong?' 'No dad that was a clone he made out of his ass hair,'" gathering over 100,000 likes in three days.

Other internet users posted memes and comics in defense of Kratos, as seen in a post by X^[10] user @Bonnymama7, who referenced a headband given to Wukong by Tang Sanzang, a Buddhist monk, to control his violent tendencies.

On August 25th, 2024, YouTuber^[11] AfroSenju XL posted a video titled, "Black Myth Wukong VS Kratos," gathering over 200,000 views in a day.

On August 26th, X^[9] user @Easterhandz posted a fan art depicting Kratos and Wukong fighting, gathering over 27,000 likes in a day.
