Both Are Naked and Covered in Oil, Who's Winning the Twerk-off? refers to a series of Who Would Win? memes in which the viewer is asked to decide which of two people or characters would win in a twerk-off below the catchphrase. The meme format gained virality on Twitter and Instagram in early May 2022.
Origin
On May 1st, 2022, Twitter[1] user @L0BOTOMITES tweeted images of The Bad Guys character Diane Foxington and Zootopia character Judy Hopps, writing, "Aight so both are naked and completely covered in Oil whos winning the Twerk off?" The post gained over 330 retweets, 560 quote tweets and 2,200 likes in three days (shown below).
Spread
The post inspired parodies on social media in the following days, with users posting two images of people or characters asking the same question. For example, on May 1st, 2022, Twitter[2] user @noodleshopkenz made a Guilty Gear version of the post, with the tweet gaining over 40 retweets and 620 likes (shown below, left). On May 2nd, 2022, Twitter[3] user @brongulo asked the question about United States Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, with the post gaining over 1,600 retweets and 15,100 likes in two days (shown below, right).
In early May 2022, the caption saw further spread in memes on Twitter and Instagram.
