About

Lana, How I Hate Those Guys is a fan art illustration depicting Lana Del Rey and Marina Diamandis sitting together while quoting lyrics from Del Rey's 2012 song "This Is What Makes Us Girls." The illustration became widely associated with Tumblr's early 2010s "sad girl" aesthetic and the fandoms surrounding both artists.

The image experienced a nostalgic resurgence in the 2020s, with many users recalling it as an iconic piece of early 2010s Tumblr culture. It is frequently redrawn, often in an ironic or self-aware manner.

Origin

The image is a fan art illustration created by Brazilian artist and illustrator Marina Nogueira, or @marinanogueira on Instagram.[1] It depicts singers Lana Del Rey and Marina Diamandis sitting together, with Del Rey portrayed in pink and Diamandis wearing a flower crown and a "HOLLYWOOD" T-shirt, and a speech bubble referencing lyrics from Del Rey's 2012 song "This Is What Makes Us Girls". Though the exact date of origin is unknown, the illustration circulated on Twitter / X and Tumblr between 2013 and 2014.

Though the account is now private and thus inaccessible, credit is consistently attributed to Marina Nogueira’s Instagram, as shown by an early upload posted on January 25th, 2014, by Tumblr[2] user plasticmonday.

Spread

The illustration gained widespread popularity on social media between 2013 and 2015, particularly within fan communities centered around Lana Del Rey, Marina Diamandis and the platform's "soft grunge" aesthetic. During this period, the artwork was frequently shared alongside quotes, moodboards and other imagery associated with the "sad girl" subculture and Del Rey's Born to Die era.

During this period, it also inspired redraws and edits that replaced the original characters with other celebrities and fictional characters while preserving the composition and caption. For example, on August 31st, 2013, X[3] (then Twitter) user @LanaDelReyFan shared a redraw while tagging Marina, though the post did not see much engagement

By the mid-to-late 2010s, the image had spread to Instagram and Pinterest, where it remained in lower-profile circulation for several years. Between approximately 2016 and 2020, it was shared primarily through reposts, Stories, saved images and private fandom communities rather than large-scale viral posts.

The image experienced an ironic revival in the 2020s. By this point, the image had become closely associated with nostalgia for early 2010s Tumblr culture and was frequently referenced in an ironic or self-aware manner. On September 16th, 2021, Redditor[3] posted a thread in r/MarinaAndTheDiamonds reminiscing about the illustration's popularity during Tumblr's early 2010s heyday, which has received over 600 upvotes in about five years.
