Lemon Car refers to a stock image of a lemon with toy car wheels attached. In early January 2019, the image was widely circulated within several subreddits along with memes using pictures of lemons and other citrus fruits.

Origin

On February 20th, 2009, a stock image titled "Lemon with Automobile Wheels," featuring a lemon with toy car wheels attached to it, was uploaded to Shutterstock.^[1]

On July 2nd, 2018, Redditor blueberrybrown posted the stock image to the /r/dankmemes^[2] subreddit along with a This Meme Is From the Future caption (shown below). The post gained 3,100 upvotes in 6 months.

Spread

On December 31st, 2018, blueberrybrown posted a link to his July 2018 post to newly-created /r/LemonAIDS^[3] subreddit. Several hours later, Redditor^[4] Bobyyyyyyyghyh posted an Allow Us to Introduce Ourselves meme photoshopped with lemons to /r/dankmemes. The post gained over 4,000 upvotes within two days. In the comment section, Bobyyyyyyyghyh referred to the July 2018 post by blueberrrybrown.^[5]

On January 1st, 2019, blueberrybrown posted an image mentioning his July 2018 post to /r/dankmemes^[6] (shown below, left). The post received over 22,700 upvotes in two days. On the same day, several highly-upvoted images featuring lemons and "lemon car" were posted to /r/dankmemes subreddit.

Over the next two days, a large number of memes featuring images of lemons and referencing the influx were posted to /r/dankmemes, /r/memes, /r/me_irl and other subreddits.

On January 18th, 2019, the car leasing company Fair referenced the meme with a commercial that features a lemon with 4 wheels attached.
