"This Meme Is From The Future" is a photoshopped image of an elderly man being attacked by three colored clones of himself. On Reddit, the image has inspired a folklore portraying the old man as a time traveller from the future in the year 42069 who has been sent back in time to 2016.
Origin
The first instance of the meme was uploaded to /r/me_irl[1] by Redditor DanknessIn_MemesOut on December 5th, 2016. The image features a yellow-tinted exploitable image of a old man being jumped on by three other clones of himself, tinted in green. purple and blue. (shown below). The post garnered more than 25,000 upvotes within the first 48 hours.
Spread
On December 6th, 2016, Redditor pepis3 posted an image of four old men getting sucked into the portal of a stargate with the caption reading "Rare image of a meme about to travel to the past (Circa 42069)". (shown below, left) The image gained over 9,000 in 24 hours.[2] Later that same day, Redditor Neceron posted an image[3] of a "meme of the month chart" for the year 42069, with the three old men edited in for the month of December. (shown below, right), garnering nearly 10,000 upvotes in less than 48 hours.
