About

« Les gens qui parlent en français, ils ont tellement de charisme ! » [People that speak French, they have so much charisma!] is a catchphrase uttered by the Moroccan-Ontarian influencer Pokimane on 24 March 2020. Native French speakers across the world decided to prove her wrong by showing the worst French possible, to make a point that it could in fact sound thrashy.

Pokimane's knowledge of French

Considering that Morocco was once a French protectorate, it is quite likely that many people in Pokimane's family knew French even back in Morocco. When she was 4 years old, her family immigrated to Québec, but went to Ontario after only a year. She has a passive understanding of her family's dialectal Arabic, Darija.

In Ontario, she attended a Franco-Ontarian elementary school, so she began her schooling in French. She only learned English from her third year onwards. She however uses her English more, so it is stronger than her French now.

She has occasionally made videos in French, reacted to shitposting in French, played online in French, was invited to broadcasts in French, but she mainly streams in English.

Pokimane currently resides in Los Ángeles with five other streamers, but does not have the US citizenship.

Once, she realized that although she was speaking French to her interlocutor, he was in fact Algerian, so a Maghrebi like her:

She was also fascinated when she finally saw a French AZERTY keyboard for the first time.

Origin of the meme in 2020

On Tuesday 24 March 2020, Pokimane was a remote guest on the broadcast POPCORN from Domingo. Pokimane discussed in French about the sanitary lockdown in California, her life in Los Ángeles, and the world of livestreamers in general. She previously had played with Domingo

After that guest appearance, she started a livestream on Twitch. Just before playing Animal Crossing : New Horizon, she had her usual Just Chatting session, and she watched classics of the French YouTube:

While she was watching the video Ads VS Life of the famous French YouTuber Cyprien, Cyprien said:

« Les mecs qui font les pubs à la télé, soit il sont complètement drogués, soit ils viennent d'un monde parallèle. J'vois que ça ! J'crois qu'les pubs, c'est le truc le plus éloigné de la réalité. »

The guys who make ads on TV, either they are completely drugged, either they come from a parallel world. It's the only possibility! I think ads are the farthest thing from reality.

She then paused the video, and reacted:

« Oh mon Dieu ! Les gens qui parlent en français, ils ont tellement de charisme ! »

Oh my God ! People that speak French, they have so much charisma!

On 5 October 2025, Pokimane would tweet her famous catchphrase on Twitter (it was not called X yet):

TikTok has a playlist titled "Pokimane Speaking French" that lists all kinds of clips in which she spoke French, but also the memes with her catchphrase.

First uses of the meme in France

On 22 June 2020, Elioth answered to Pokimane with his video demonstrating that the French did not in fact have that much charisma:

Countless other examples were used to show that French was far from a fancy language:

Uses of the meme in Québec

The famous page Fruiter made an extensive use of the meme. On 16 September 2022, it made a compilation of all its uses:
