About

Let's Pump It Up! refers to a series of videos remixing the K-pop group Loona's song "Why Not?" The chorus of the song features the lyric, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa… Let's pump it up!" This section is often remixed in bait and switch videos where a character from a television show or movie repeats "Whoa" before the video cuts to the "Why Not?" chorus.

Origin

On October 19th, 2020, Loona released their song "Why Not?" (shown below, left). The first known parody was released one month later on November 19th by YouTuber axiestan, who spliced the "Why Not?" chorus with a clip of Charli XCX repeating "Whoa." The video gained over 472,000 views (shown below, right).

Spread

Over the following several months, other YouTubers made similar videos splicing the "Why Not?" chorus with other pieces of media. Popular examples include a March 21st, 2021 clip by Relatable Legend that gained over 128,000 views (shown below, left) and a March 17th clip posted by maJa that spliced the song with a clip from How I Met Your Mother, gaining over 60,000 views (shown below, right).

On February 5th, 2021, user Stan Anime posted a parody that made a different joke, using the chorus as the soundtrack for a fictitious commercial for arthritis cream. The video gained over 221,000 views (shown below).
