About

Literally Me Guys refers to a loose group of fictional characters, usually outsider figures with certain redeemable qualities, whom people, typically socially maladapted men, tend to relate to, associate themselves with and borrow personality traits from. Some of the best-known characters within the archetype are Joker, Driver, Officer K, Patrick Bateman and Guts. Many of the characters are often described as based fall within the Sigma Male archetype and have appeared in Sigma Grindset memes.

Origin

While self-association with fictional is a trend that predates the internet, the modern trend is generally considered to have originated with 4chan's obsession with the 2011 film Drive and its main character Driver, portrayed by Ryan Gosling.[1] Driver is a silent, lonely type around 30 years of age, who lives a simple live working as a mechanic and a stunt double by day and a getaway driver for criminals at night. During the events of the film, Driver manages to start a relationship with his neighbour Irene and is about to become a professional racer before a twist of fate forces him to abandon his hopes for a normal life. Driver is forced to kill in order to protect Irene and her son, sacrificing his own future for their sake.

The character's traits such as "lonely type," "socially maladapted," "silent," "punished by fate" resonated with the general audience of 4chan. In September 2014, 4chan posts about Drive and greentexts in which users admitted to acting like driver achieved major spread online.
