Origin

On December 13th, 2012, episode nine "The Gang Dines Out" of season eight of the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia TV series premiered in the United States.^[1] In one scene of the episode, characters Mac and Charlie stare at each other across a restaurant.

Spread

In the days following the premiere of the episode, multiple posts with the scene as GIF and a multi-panel image were made online on Reddit and other websites.^[2] Additionally, several videos of the clip were posted on YouTube] On December 9th, 2013, Redditor TheNandoHunter posted screenshots of the scene set as lock screen and phone screen backgrounds, with the posts gaining over 580 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).^[5] On December 17th, 2013, Redditor Deal_The_Man posted a GIF of the scene to reaction images, with the post gaining over 1,500 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).^[6]

In the following years, the scene saw limited spread online as a meme format, with an increase in a number of notable examples since late 2017. For example, a December 8th, 2017, post by Redditor mmkramer gained over 3,300 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).^[7] A May 8th, 2019, post by Redditor Blackcat008 received over 26,000 upvotes in two months (shown below, right).^[8]
