About

"Anyway, I Started Blasting," altered as "So Anyway, I Started Blasting," is a memorable quote said by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia character Frank Reynolds during his argument in support of gun ownership on a local TV station. Starting in late September 2019, a captioned still image from the scene gained popularity on Reddit as a reaction.

Origin

On September 11th, 2013, the episode "Gun Fever Too: Still Hot" of the American television series It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia premiered in the United States.[1] In the opening scene of the episode, character Frank Reynolds, portrayed by Danny DeVito, advocates gun ownership on a local television station by providing an anecdote about him fighting off two robbers by indiscriminately shooting in their general direction (scene shown below).

- But it's a lucky thing I had my pieces.
- Your pieces?
- My guns! Anyway, I started blasting. Pow! Pow! Now, I don't see so good so I missed.

On September 29th, 2019, Facebook [5] user Josh Davis posted the earliest known version of the meme in the It's Always Sunny Shitposting Facebook group, captioning the image as the reaction police would have to an "unarmed black man." The post received more than 6,500 reactions, 1,000 comments and 1,000 shares in less than two months (shown below).

Spread

On September 30th, 2019, Redditor DannyHallam posted another meme based on the image from the scene to /r/IASIP subreddit where it gained over 3,300 upvotes in two weeks (shown below).[2]

On the same day, Redditor kr_SB reused the image for a post to /r/HistoryMemes subreddit, where it received over 7,400 upvotes in two weeks, prompting the further spread of the meme (shown below, left).[3] A Naruto meme by Redditor ItchiUcha, posted on the same day, received over 2,100 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).[4]

Vietnamese Child: exists US Army: FX So anyway I started blasting. Kakashi: This is a tough enemy, we need to come up with a plan! Naruto: ITCHIUCHA So anyway I started blasting. 1l/

In the following weeks, the format received a significant spread on Reddit, with multiple notable posts appearing in /r/IASIP, /r/dankmemes and other communities.
