Man Reading the Bible and Smoking a Blunt is a reaction image and meme format used in a series of image macros depicting a black-and-white image of a Black man reading the Bible while smoking a blunt. The image was first used as a meme alongside the caption "Sometimes you have to be high to understand the most-high" in 2016 and saw a boost in popularity starting in 2023. The meme is largely used to describe the feeling of focusing hard on something.
Origin
On January 31st, 2016, Redditor u/imjayybro posted an image macro to the subreddit /r/BlackPeopleTwitter[1] in which the caption "sometimes you have to be high to understand the most-high" is shown above an image of a Black man reading the Bible while smoking a blunt, garnering over 460 upvotes in eight years (shown below). This is the earliest known meme to use the image, although it may have been taken from a now-deleted tweet.
Spread
The meme became increasingly popularized throughout the 2020s. On November 14th, 2023, Redditor u/Zenner523 posted a screenshot to /r/196[2] of a tweet by now-deleted user @Dnt1000 using the image captioned, "Reading the groupchat after I take a nap," garnering around 110 upvotes in seven months.
On December 3rd, X[3] user @JozuJoestar posted a version of the meme, writing, "me reading the tweets of a person live tweeting their manic episode," garnering over 1,700 likes in six months (shown below, left). On April 27th, 2024, X[4] user @ascinhiding posted a version of the meme that gained over 16,000 likes in two months (shown below, right).
On May 21st, X[5] user @bendergirlfrend posted a version of the meme captioned, "Me watching American Dad intro seeing what funny outfit Roger will appear in," garnering over 33,000 likes in two weeks (shown below). It was reposted to iFunny[6] on May 25th, garnering over 4,000 smiles in a week.
On June 2nd, 2024, X[7] user @yunusincognito posted an image of the man smoking the blunt and reading the Bible next to a screenshot of a YouTube thumbnail as a quote-repost by a user writing, "Men loving showing you a YouTube video. It feels so good for them," garnering over 87,000 likes in a day.
