Mar Hospital Bed Instagram Live Edits, also known as Lilmar Hospital Bed Instagram Live Edits, Mar You X AF or DIE MAR, refers to a series of crudely made Photoshop edits of Lolcow rapper Lilmar during an Instagram Live in which he was in a hospital bed and the chat comments were saying, "DIE MAR," "Mar you ugly af" and "Alcohol or car," among other insults. The screenshot of the Instagram Live was taken sometime in 2021 in which Mar is pictured looking at the camera. It was posted to Twitter / X in February 2023, later becoming a viral exploitable in April and May 2023 as creators made Mar look like a bug, Mario or covered him in mold, among other absurd and ironic iterations. They also recaptioned the chat messages in accordance with the meme's theme.

Origin

On June 3rd, 2021, Amino^[12] user alonelyreesespuff posted a screenshot of a then-recent Lilmar Instagram Live in which Mar was in a hospital bed and looking at the camera as users in the chat (@skrttao, @kek_big_boss, @1600.briann) were saying, "PULL THE PLUG ON HIM" and "Mar you ugly af," among other insults. The Amino post earned nine likes in two years and is the earliest discovered sharing of the image (shown below).

On September 25th, 2021, Instagram^[1] user @sssnark posted an exploited screenshot of the screenshot, recaptioning the chat read affirmative comments like "I love you Mar" and "Get well soon lilmar." The post gained over 180 likes in a year and a half (shown below).

On the following day, September 26th, 2021, Instagram^[2] user @willawanna posted the same meme, gaining roughly 3,400 likes.

Spread

On May 7th, 2022, a screenshot of the video was posted by Instagram^[3] user @wiggazoid, gaining over 230 likes in one year. However, the post was poorly cropped. A better-cropped version was first posted by Twitter^[4] user @swagjesusfan on February 3rd, 2023, gaining roughly 2,500 likes in three months.

After Twitter^[4] user @swagjesusfan's tweet, others on the platform exploited the format. For instance, one of the earliest was uploaded by Twitter^[5] user @unnwound on February 28th, showing Lilmar with mold on him and the comments reading phrases like, "Mar you moldy af," gaining roughly 2,000 likes in three months (shown below).

In late April 2023, the memes appeared en masse. For instance, one of the first was uploaded by Twitter^[13] user @sugarsmorecake on April 27th, showing Lilmar as LeBron James, gaining over 520 likes in two years (shown below).

In the replies, on April 27th, 2023, Twitter^[14] user @CatEnjoyer tweeted a new iteration with a tiny Lilmar, receiving 46 likes in two years (shown below). On the following day, Twitter^[6] user @1ast_dayz reposted the meme, where it gained over 1,100 likes.

Later on April 28th, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @wh5le tweeted a GIF iteration that made Lilmar wavy, seen swaying back and forth. The tweet received roughly 2,900 likes in four days (shown below). It eventually inspired more GIF and video iterations on Twitter.^[8]

The memes also spread to Reddit^[9] in late April 2023.

Twitter users then started viral threads that compiled the Lilmar memes. For instance, on April 29th, Twitter^[10] user @anemshiki tweeted a bug iteration (originally posted by Twitter^[11] user @ARGGENT3) with the caption, "If I see one more mar meme I'm losing it dawg how do you even come up with this," gaining roughly 12,700 likes in three days (shown below).
