Marcia Fudge Press Conference Reaction refers to a reaction video and image macro of Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Marcia L. Fudge pointing to her ear after with her finger and saying "good afternoon" at the start of a press conference and hearing no response. The Black Twitter community praised Secretary Fudge for her ability to manage the room, referring to her action as "Black auntie energy." Others used screenshots of her pointing to her ear as a reaction image to express the desire for a response to a comment or message.
Origin
On March 18th, 2021, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Marcia L. Fudge addressed a press conference. After being announced, she approached the podium and said, "Good afternoon." When the members of the press did not respond, Secretary Fudge shook her head, pointed to her ear and said, "Good afternoon," again. As she said it the second time, the press members responded, in unison, "Good afternoon" (shown below).

That day, on March 18th, 2021, Twitter user @dilemmv tweeted a clip from the beginning of the press conference and captioned, "She got the press TOGETHER in less than 12 seconds! That’s black auntie energy." The tweet received more than 401,000 likes and 66,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below).

Hours later, Twitter @AstasiaWill tweeted the video with the caption, "I love having Black Aunties in the White House. come correct." The tweet received more than 1.3 million views, 115,000 likes and 25,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below).

Following the posts, people began posting images of Secretary Fudge pointing at her ear and making jokes about not receiving a response. On March 20th, Twitter[1] user @yoo_johnnyy tweeted the image with the caption, "When you say 'hey Siri' and that bitch don’t respond." The tweet received more than 84,000 likes and 16,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
Twitter[2] user @Carpe_Nocteeem tweeted, "Gonna start using this when no one responds in the group chat." The tweet received more than 61,000 likes and 11,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, center). The following day, Redditor here_4_tha_comments posted the tweet on the /r/BlackPeopleTwitter[3] subreddit, where it received more than 1,900 points (99% upvoted) in less than two weeks.
Throughout the day, memes like this continued. Twitter[4] user @FirstGentleman tweeted the image and the caption, "Me double texting cuz I know you saw my first message." The tweet received more than 70,000 likes and 15,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
On March 21st, YouTuber ComedianShulerKing posted a reaction video to the clip. The post received more than 230,000 views in less than one week (shown below).
