Michael Jackson Hee Hee or Michael Jackson HeHe, also known as Michael Jackson's "He He" or Michael Jackson's "HeeHee," refers to pop star Michael Jackson's signature laugh, which is often stylized as "hee-hee," among many other variations. Jackson's laugh has been famous in pop culture for decades, including having a large presence in both internet and meme culture.

The iconic "hee-hee" version of his laugh has been used for a wide range of memes and jokes online since the 2000s, including puns referencing it or using it as a sound effect edited into videos. MJ laugh compilations have also been prominent on YouTube since at least the early 2010s. In the mid-2020s, hee-hee memes and sound effects also saw significant usage on TikTok in various edits, lip dubs and other comedic skits.

Origin

Originally, the "hee-hee" laugh came from singer-songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder, specifically stemming from his song "Maybe Your Baby" on the album Talking Book, which was released on October 27th, 1972. The sound can be heard throughout the song and is purportedly what inspired Michael Jackson to mimic it in his own music later on.^[2]

The earliest known instance of Michael Jackson using the sound on a song comes from "Blame It On the Boogie" by The Jacksons (released on September 8th, 1978), in which MJ says, "Hee-hee," near the beginning of the track.

Jackson's iconic laugh can be heard in many of his songs throughout his extensive music career. For instance, the "hee-hee" can be heard in his hit song "Black or White," released on November 4th, 1991.

Jackson's "hee-hee" laugh has been parodied and referenced in pop culture for many decades, as well as seeing usage online in memes, but it is unknown when exactly this first took place, and the true memetic origin is likely lost to time.

One early example of his laugh being used for a gag in a film comes from a scene in Scary Movie 3, released on October 20th, 2003, during the altercation between Charlie Sheen and MJ.

Hee-hee compilation videos referencing the soundbite have appeared on YouTube for years, marking one of the earliest memetic uses of MJ's laugh. For example, on March 14th, 2010, the YouTube^[1] channel jansui uploaded a video titled "Michael Jackson – Hee-Hee Compilation" that included numerous variants of the laugh, garnering over 1.9 million views, 26,000 likes and 2,000 comments in 16 years.

Michael Jackson's "hee-hee" sound effect continued seeing use in compilations, memes, wordplay jokes and other humorous content throughout the 2010s and 2020s as it spread online and remained relevant through pop culture.

For instance, on October 30th, 2014, the YouTube channel Alice Anselmi uploaded another compilation video of MJ's laugh, receiving over 750,000 views, 7,800 likes and 200 comments in 11 years.

On July 28th, 2017, Instagram^[5] user bigguao posted a meme joking about the "hehe" laugh alongside an edited image of MJ texting on a phone in bed, garnering nearly 1,000 likes in nine years.

On December 28th, 2018, X / Twitter^[3] user lessonlatrifa used the laugh in a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure meme, captioning the clip, "r.i.p. hee hee man." The tweet garnered over 1,200 likes, 410 retweets and 10 replies in eight years.

On March 18th, 2021, Redditor AshwinJackson posted a He Protec but He Also Attac meme referencing the laugh to the /r/dankmemes^[4] subreddit, receiving over 24,000 upvotes and 130 comments in five years.

On June 16th, 2026, TikTok^[6] user aisha_aesthet_mj1958 shared a meme edit using MJ and his hee-hee laugh, garnering over 811,600 views, 215,500 likes and 1,380 comments in a day.
