About
Mimi-Sentry is a player model and ragdoll for Team Fortress 2 designed as an anthropomorphic, female version of the mini sentry turret. The model, designed by Steam user Mochi, was originally posted to the Steam Workshop in February 2023 and became increasingly popularized among Source Filmmaker and Garry's Mod creators over the following months, also inspiring fan art and other content.
Origin
As early as 2020, several artists online began creating anthropomorphic versions of the mini sentry from Team Fortress 2,[1] a sentry turret dropped by engineers, often depicting it as a robotic female character and referring to her as "mini sentry chan," "sentry girl" or "mini sentry tan."[2][3][4] On May 17th, 2021, Newgrounds[16] user Flyingpiggles10 posted artwork of an anthropomorphic sentry girl named Mimi, garnering over 300 views in two years (shown below).
On February 23rd, 2023, Steam user Mochi, the same user as Flyingpiggles10 on Newgrounds, uploaded a player model and ragdoll of Mimi-Sentry to the Steam Workshop,[5] gaining over 16,500 subscriptions in three months (screenshots from Steam page shown below).
On February 24th, YouTuber[6] animation162gmod posted an SFM animation using the model, garnering over 90,000 views in three months (shown below). This is the earliest known animation to use the model.
Spread
The model became increasingly prevalent online in May 2023 as people began creating further fan animation and art featuring the character.
For example, on April 18th, 2023, YouTuber[7] NikoTak04 posted an SFM animation using the model that gained over 200,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On May 7th, a Redditor on /r/tf2[8] made a post asking for members' opinions on the mod and sharing artwork made using it, garnering over 2,500 upvotes in 10 days. On the same day, YouTuber[9] annaberu posted an animation of Mimi-Sentry dancing to "Out Of Touch," also posting it to /r/tf2,[10] garnering over 100,000 views and 2,900 upvotes, respectively, in 10 days (shown below).
On May 11th, YouTuber[11] atsuover posted an SFM animation using the character model, garnering over 273,000 views in a week (shown below). On May 12th, YouTuber[12] Colonel Fanzipantzen posted an animation that gained over 142,000 views.
The character also became a prominent subject of fan art around the same time on sites including the /r/tf2 subreddit, DeviantArt and Twitter (examples shown below).[13][14]
