Mirror Gun Selfie, also known as Gun Mirror Guy, is an image macro and reaction image meme featuring a smiling man taking a mirror selfie while his reflection appears to show a handgun pointed at the back of his head. The image is commonly used to express regret, buyer's remorse, self-inflicted problems or situations in which someone is outwardly pretending to be happy despite struggling internally.

After appearing in late 2021, the reaction image became especially prominent in online conversations discussing sports, becoming widely shared across social media platforms, including Twitter / X, Reddit and more throughout the 2020s.

Origin

The original image depicts an anonymous bearded Black man smiling while taking a bathroom mirror selfie. Due to the angle of the photograph, the reflection reveals that he is holding a handgun to the back of his own head. The identity of the man and the original context in which the photograph was taken have not been publicly documented.

The photograph began circulating online as early as late 2021, as indicated by its presence on dedicated reaction image accounts.

On October 14th, 2021, the X^[1] / Twitter account @reactjpg uploaded the image with the description, "man smiling taking selfie but mirror in background shows he is pointing a gun at his own head." Although the post itself did not see significant traction, it is currently the earliest active upload of the image available.

Spread

The image subsequently spread across Reddit and other social media platforms in the 2020s, where users repurposed it as a reaction image to convey feelings of either regret on their own behalf or extreme frustration over the actions or decisions of others, such as favorite sports teams performing badly or game developers cancelling or delaying projects.

For example, on November 16th, 2024, Redditor Aggressive_Smoke posted the image in a thread titled "Silent spade snafu snipers only" to the /r/Wildlands^[2] subreddit, receiving over 100 upvotes in a year and a half.

Another example, posted on August 20th, 2025, by Redditor brainattacks_ posted the image with the commentary, "If there is no ac8 at the game awards im killing myself" to the /r/acecombat^[3] subreddit, garnering over 280 upvotes in roughly a year.

The image continued to circulate organically across social media as users adapted it to an increasingly wide variety of situations. The image's relatability and versatility in use resulted in its consistent popularity across platforms for several years, despite lacking a single defining viral event.

On January 19th, 2026, X^[4] user^[3] @mnsh_iee shared a redraw of the image featuring Jax from "The Amazing Digital Circus"https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/the-amazing-digital-circus, which received about 10,500 views and 1,500 likes in a bit over six months.
