About

"Misery x CPR" is a 2021 viral remix and mashup of Maroon 5's song "Misery" and CupcakKe's song "CPR" produced by natcakke. The remix was posted to TikTok and YouTube in December 2021. A variation of the remix using the vocals from both songs went viral in lip dubs and skits on TikTok. In January 2022, the Reese's Puffs rap was added to the mashup, with animations in which three characters each perform one vocal track within the "Misery x CPR x Reese's Puffs" mashup going viral on Twitter and YouTube.

Origin

On December 28th, 2021, TikTok[1] user @natalieeeeuhhh posted a clip of a remix of the instrumentals from Maroon 5's "Misery" and the lyrics from CupcakKe's "CPR" to, gaining over 605,000 views in four weeks. They posted the full version to YouTube that same day (shown below), gaining over 757,000 views in the same span of time.

On January 6th, 2022, TikToker[2] @user140720077 posted a version of the mashup in which the lyrics to "CPR" were added back into the track, with the post gaining over 6.7 million views prior to being removed (shown below).

Spread

The original sound[3] from the video went viral, inspiring over 369,000 videos on TikTok as of January 26th, 2022. The majority of the videos are lip-dub skits that play on jokes about being miserable, with no dominant trend (notable examples shown below).

The song became popularized in animations on YouTube that month, often showing one person miserable and another happy, reflecting the tones of each song. On January 11th, YouTuber[4] ChernyyKofe posted a FNAF: Security Breach animation using the audio, gaining over a million views in two weeks (shown below).

On January 13th, 2022, YouTuber[5] Mizuki posted another remix of the two songs, gaining over 2.4 million views in roughly two weeks (shown below, left). On January 14th, YouTuber[6] Ijustwannahavefun posted an animation set to the song, gaining over 940,000 views in just under two weeks (shown below, right).

Misery x CPR x Reese's Puffs

On January 16th, 2022, TikToker[7] misc_mashup uploaded a version of the mashup in which they added the Reese's Puffs rap from the 2009 Reese's Puffs commercial into it. The video gained over 1.1 million views and 151,500 likes in one month (shown below, left). On January 20th, TikToker[8] @iimmy_xx posted the earliest found viral meme in which each of three vocal tracks in the mashup was assigned to a character (Spider-Men from Spider-man: No Way Home). The post gained over 1.9 million views and 530,000 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Starting on January 21st, memes based on the new mashup were posted on Twitter and YouTube, with users distributing vocal tracks between three or more characters. For example, on that day, Twitter[9] user @boysbffs posted a VALORANT version of the meme, which gained over 680 retweets and 2,500 likes in one month (shown below).

In February 2022, on TikTok,[10] the song was used for word randomizer filter memes, as well as for animations similar to those posted to Twitter and YouTube. As of February 17th, 2022, over 239,700 videos using the mashup were posted on the platform.

In February 2022, a version of the meme that also included "Low" by Flo Rida (better known as Apple Bottom Jeans) as its fourth vocal track gained spread.
