Mom, It Was Never A Phase, It's A Lifestyle refers to a video on TikTok by @yungricepatty in which he yells the titular line and then sings along to All Time Low's "Dear Maria Count Me In."[7] This inspired a lip-dub trend on the platform.

Origin

On December 14th, 2020, @yungricepatty uploaded a video to TikTok[1] (shown below) where he's sitting in his car listening to the 2007 pop-punk song "Dear Maria Count Me In" by All Time Low, a highly-regarded song among fans of the genre. He yells over the song, "Mom, It Was Never A Phase, It's A Lifestyle" and then proceeds to sing along with the song. The video gained over 8.2 million views in a month.

On December 16th, 2020, All Time Low's official Twitter page re-posted the video, garnering over 15,000 likes and 4,100 retweets. As the video went viral, users began lip-dubbing to it. On December 29th, @trashxm0uth uploaded a lip-dub to the sound,[5] garnering over 4.3 million views in 3 weeks (shown below, left). On January 7th, 2021, @spencergoulding uploaded a lip-dub to TikTok,[6] garnering over 1.4 million views in 2 weeks (shown below, right).

On January 13th, 2021, the lead singer of All Time Low, Alex Gaskarth, tweeted,[4] "I always knew Dear Maria would be a massive TikTok song when we wrote it in 2006" garnering over 108,000 likes and 10,800 retweets in 8 days (shown below).
