My Wife Just Finished a Shift refers to a series of memes that parody a viral tweet by Canadian politician Jon Reyes in which he praises his wife for finding the energy to shovel snow in their driveway after a 12-hour night shift. Parodies using the original tweet as a phrasal template became popularized on Twitter in mid-January 2022.

On January 8th, 2022, Canadian politician Jon Reyes (@jonreyes204) tweeted[1] a photograph of his wife shoveling snow in the driveway after finishing a 12-hour night shift at the hospital, praising her and promising to make her breakfast. The photograph was taken from inside the house looking downward. The tweet gained over 5,800 retweets, 21,500 quote tweets and 44,900 likes in three days (shown below).

Starting on January 8th, users on Twitter[2] criticized @jonreyes over him not shoveling the snow himself or assisting his wife in the task, instead appearing to stay in the comfort of his home. For example, on that day, Twitter user @jtylerconway replied with a My Hands Look Like This meme that gained over 2,600 retweets and 56,400 likes in three days (shown below).

Starting on January 9th, 2022, the tweet became a subject of parodies across Twitter. For example, on that day Twitter[3] user @manurespreader made a tweet that received over 730 retweets and 23,800 likes in two days (shown below, left). Later on the same day, Twitter[4] user @Real_bear_horse posted a Neon Genesis Evangelion meme that gained over 250 retweets and 5,300 likes in two days (shown below, right).

On January 9th, 2022, Cynthia Reyes, the wife of Jon Reyes, quote tweeted[5] the post, writing, "All I wanted to do was shovel! 🤦‍♀️" (tweet shown below, left). On January 11th, 2022, Reyes made a Facebook[6] post in which she clarified the situation, refuting allegations that her husband wronged her (post shown below, right).

As I drove home, it's my time to decompress, I arrived home before anyone was awake, afterall it was a Saturday morning. As I pulled up to my driveway, I felt energy to shovel the snow that fell understanding, objectivity, and respect for each other. being exposed to such a toxic environment regularly. As a society we have to do better. We all need to promote kindness, decency. all night and into the morning. As many Manitobans and Canadians know, it's a great workout, it allowed me to unwind, it's refreshing after having worn an N95 mask almost the entire night, the weather was mild and it was quiet and peaceful. Also, for all the people Lastly, what was said by my husband on twitter was honest, genuine and sincere, this made me realize that I am grateful that he appreciates what I do and that he loves me and shows it publicly, this including us who are concerned about climate change, this is good for is nothing new. I am proud that he is unapologetically himself. So NO the environment, hence we don't need a snow blower! Most importantly, I enjoy it. Jon heard me shovelling, it actually woke him up and he was surprised and impressed to see that I had energy after a long shift to do this, so he took a pic, made breakfast and posted, and the rest is embedded in social media history forever! as per Twitter I will not be divorcing him over shovelling as many have recommended. e It was made out to be something far from the truth and has taken on a life of it's own and this happens every single day in social media/ mainstream media. It's the way we roll, Jon loves cooking and I love shovelling and vice versa, it's really not a big deal! We all live busy relationships, faith and friendships are compassionate and loving and you. We really want you to all know that we are truly okay, our family lives and we have to get things done. We want to teach our kids hard work and responsibility. It's a must in life and that is why we are able to be productive in all of the things that we want to do. that is what keeps us strong. I wish the same support for everyone. Not the most exciting story, but it's the truth if it is worth something these days in the context of social media/ media. That brings me to the fact that this tweet probably would not have gone viral if the gender roles were reversed, or if my husband were not a politician. Meh… As usual people love to overreact and assume the worst in people.

If she works during the night and he works during the day, he probably just woke up to find her shoveling. He appreciated the gesture and took a picture. Something that takes literally five seconds to do. Just because she's doing hard manual labor at this VERY MOMENT, doesn't mean that he won't make it up to her or that he never does anything at all…

When he showed her the picture she probably just found it funny. Her mindset was probably something like: "Hey I'm already all dressed up and in the cold, I might as well do a little shoveling before getting inside, no need to wake him up for that". That's what couples do, they HELP each other out and do considerate things to one another.

I once had a day off and also found my wife doing some shoveling when she got back from work. I thanked her and did my part shoveling during the next storm…
