About
Name a Fictional Character Who Would Pay for Twitter Blue is a catchphrase used in a Twitter trend that involves posting images of fictional characters who would presumably spend $8 to subscribe to Twitter Blue. The image and GIF caption meme format gained virality on Twitter in April 2023.
Origin
On April 8th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @System9509 tweeted, "Name a fictional character that would pay for twitter blue," attaching a GIF of King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong video game series. The tweet (shown below) gained 19 retweets, over 250 quote tweets and 330 likes in three days.
Spread
Starting on that day, other users on Twitter quote tweeted the original tweet with images and GIFs of other fictional characters that would likely have paid money to subscribe to Twitter Blue.
For example, on April 9th, 2023, the Twitter[2] gimmick account @OOCCouchGags posted a GIF of Montgomery Burns from The Simpsons that gained 18 retweets and over 510 likes in two days (shown below, left). The trend continued over the following days with users quote-tweeting other people's versions of the meme. For example, on April 10th, Twitter[3] user @BrianMLloyd posted an image of Gob Bluth (Will Arnett) from Arrested Development, with the tweet gaining over 240 retweets and 3,700 likes in one day (shown below, right).
The trend maintained moderate popularity on Twitter in the following days.
