Naw It Isnae (Scottish slang for No It Isn't) refers to a memorable quote featured in the Scottish sitcom Still Game as said by "The Neds" – a group of Glasweigan boys featured in the show. The phrase is usually directed towards something that isn't true.

Origin

In Buntin', the eighth episode of the second season of Still Game, the local councillor of Craiglang, where the show is set, opens up a new community centre, watched upon by several local residents including the Neds. The local councillor praises Craiglang for its flourishes and his 'excitement' to be opening up the area's new community centre but keeps being interrupted by the Neds, who periodically say "Naw It Isnae" ("No it isn't").

Ever since the episodes airing, the scene and screenshots of the scene have been photoshopped and used to react to real life situations and events. For example, Twitter user @browna_ab tweeted it to President Donald Trump after he tweeted "AMERICA IS GREAT AGAIN!" (shown below, left). Another post paired it with Theresa May talking about Brexit (shown below, right).

2018 FIFA World Cup

The meme was used quite considerably with Scottish Twitter fans during the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia where England qualified to the quarter finals. As England were getting closer to the final, England fans kept chanting "It's coming home! Football's coming home!". Before the quarter finals, screencaps of the Naw It Isnae scene were posted on to Facebook and Twitter with pictures of England fans chanting "Football's coming home!"

England played Croatia in the quarter final match played in Russia where Croatia beat them and shortly afterwards, Scottish Twitter celebrated the failure of England's succession to the semi-finals and did so by posting the screencaps again.^[1][2]
