New York Is Magical is a photoshopped image of a woman looking out the window of an airplane and seeing an image used to signify where she is flying. In many instances, the image is manipulated to include pieces of pop cultural significance for comedic effect.

Origin

On May 27th, 2018, Redditor [1] holestagram published a photoshopped image of a woman looking out the window of an airplane and seeing a foggy image of the Statue of Liberty in the /r/pics subreddit and with the title "…New York Is Magical." The post (shown below, left) received more than 15,000 points (75% upvoted) and 375 comments in less than two days.

The image is a composite of two other photographs. The woman looking out the window of an airplane is a stock photograph by photographer Killian Pham. It was uploaded to the website Unsplash.com[2] on October 11th, 2016 (shown below, center). On April 19th, 2017, Instagram [3] user @raylivez posted the image of the Statue of Liberty in the fog. The post (shown below, right) received more than 11,900 likes in one year.



Spread

The following day, on May 28th, Redditor[4] stevechops published a version of the image with the title "..Tokyo Is Magical." The user photoshopped the image so that instead of the Statue of Liberty, the Japanese science fiction character Godzilla can be seen in the window. The post (shown below) received more than 36,000 points (88% upvoted) and 200 comments.
