About

"No Me Diga" is a song from the 2021 Jon Chu film In The Heights, an adaptation of the Lin Manuel Miranda musical of the same name. The title roughly translates to "You don't say" or "don't tell me," and the lyrics follow the format of a gossiping conversation. The song went viral on TikTok in July 2021 in association with a lip dub trend focused on jokes about gossiping.

Origin

"No Me Diga" is the fourth song on the soundtrack for In The Heights, a musical film based on the play of the same name about a New York City bodega owner named Usnavi who dreams of greater things. The song is in the form of a gossiping conversation between character Nina and other barbers at a hair salon, ultimately resulting in Nina revealing that she's dropped out of Stanford (shown below). The film was released on June 9th, 2021.

DANIELA: Bueno. You didn't hear this from me! But some little birdie told me Usnavi had sex with Yolanda!
NINA/CARLA: No me diga!
VANESSA: Ay, no! He'd never go out with A skank like that! Please tell me you're joking!
DANIELA: Okay! Just wanted to see what you'd say!
CARLA/NINA/DANIELA: Woooooooooooooooo! Tell me something I don't know! Mmm-hmm-mmm…

Spread

In late June the song became popular on TikTok as the subject of lip dup skits, often depicting gossiping conversations like in the film. An early example of this was uploaded to TikTok[1] by @lelegenevieve on June 28th, garnering over 1.3 million views in two weeks (shown below).
