About
Nobody asks "How is X?" is a snowclone phrase used to express concern about a person, usually accompanied by a picture of the person in a sad or troubled context. The phrase usually takes the form:
Everybody asks "____ is X?" Nobody asks "How is X?"
where the blank is any other interrogative word (such as "where", "why" or "what") and X is the person.
Origin
The first known version of the meme appeared February 7, 2011 and featured Waldo from the picture book series “Wheres Waldo?”. [1] Drawn by Paul Noth, it was a comic-styled drawing depicting Waldo as a sad bar patron, with a caption reading "Nobody ever asks 'How's Waldo?'"
Spread
In April that same year, Twitter user @shelbygraces published a picture of her Waldo cosplay, captioned with the phrase.[2] Noth's drawing was posted on 9gag in November that same year.[3]
Similar edits soon followed.
And after that, the meme was expanded to other characters and people.
One meme that's coincidentally related with this meme is the film quotation “Why is Gamora?”.
