About

“NONONONO Cat” is the nickname given to Marquis (Russian: Маркиз), a domestic Siberian cat most well known for his meowing that resembles the sound of a person saying “NO NO NO NO.” Marquis garnered much attention in the media and Internet blogs in September 2011, after a YouTube video of him meowing went viral and spawned numerous remixes featuring other well-known cat videos.

Origin

The original video was captured on camera by Russian YouTuber MrDron059[8] sometime in 2004 while his daughter’s friend was visiting. According to the video description, the cat wouldn’t stop making noises at his friend for reasons unknown.

MrDron059 uploaded the video to YouTube[1] on September 28th, 2011; the video reached one million views within just a few days and became one of the most favorited and most discussed comedy videos in Russia.

Spread

In the days following, the video clip was featured on various Internet humor blogs and video-sharing communities including BuzzFeed[2], CollegeHumor[3], BoingBoing[4], Dailymotion[5] G4[6] and Laughing Squid.[7]

Many remixes compared Marquis’ meowing to other well-known iterations of “NONONONO” found in popular films and music, including the lyrics from Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” and Darth Vader’s “NOOOOOOO” scream from Star Wars.

Throughout the year, more remixes were shared on eBaum’s World[9], Dangerous Minds[10], and Reddit.[11] On YouTube, a search for “NONONONO cat remix”[12] yields over 100 results.

On October 30th, 2018, RT[12] reported that NONONONO Cat, also known as Marquis, was euthanized.
