About

Notice of Meme Acquisition refers to a series of images which are posted by internet users in response to other images. They are intended to notify the original posters that their images have been saved into the user's device. The images have most notably been popular on Twitter.

Origin

On May 27th, 2016, Facebook page Zuckerborg[9] posted the text of the meme in a status that gained three likes.

One of the earliest known posts to use a variation of the "Notice of Meme Acquisition" image template was posted in a World of Warships forum on December 15th, 2016 (shown below).[1] However, there the image appeared with an iFunny logo, suggesting it had appeared there at an earlier date.

Spread

The image was reposted to Instagram[2] by user Nonechill on December 31st, 2016. It was uploaded to Know Your Meme[3] by My Name Jef on February 18th, 2017. On June 29th, Imgur[4] user icantthinkofausername uploaded a higher-quality example of the image (shown below).

The image and its variations started seeing more spread in the beginning of August 2017. On August 7th, the original image was posted to /r/MemeEconomy.[5] On the 8th, it was used in a thread in response to Mia Khalifa (shown below).

Over the course of the following several months, other variations on the image appeared as users distorted the text or altered the colors on the original. For example, on August 21st, Twitter user @NateDMW[7] uploaded a version that made it appear as a Yu-Gi-Oh card (shown below, left). On September 29th, Twitter user tethysx4[8] uploaded an inversion of the joke, posting a "denial" of tweet saving (shown below, right).
