About

Oh No, Cringe refers to a series of reaction videos that became popular on the website iFunny in late August 2021. The videos feature a sad orange cat with the words "oh no" as top text and "cringe" as bottom text, accompanied by a song and voiceover saying the words out loud. The meme continued to spread in September from this to include other countries with flags and songs that represent the country the cat is from.

Origin

On October 19th, 2020, the YouTube[2] channel Slayer MDZR uploaded the first instance of the meme, and in the description claims to have made the soundclip using their own voice, with TheFatRat's Xenogenesis as the backbeat. This video earned 130,000 views in 11 months (shown below). All other forms of the meme use this one as the base template, which features a whiny, high-pitched voice saying "oh no, cringe" while a song plays in the background.

On June 12th, 2021, iFunny[1] user THEJoshSwain posted a picture of the sad cat with the catchphrase attached to it, gaining 68 likes in two months (shown below). This is the earliest known post of the cat and text separated from the music and original source.

Spread

On July 18th, 2021, iFunny[3] user KingDerpNugget uploaded the first variation of the meme, with the cat having a sombrero and a little moustache added to him. The voice that says the catchphrase is now replaced with a Mexican-accented voice that says "oh no, crin-ghey" and a stereotypical Mexican party theme starts to play. The video post received 715 likes in one month (shown below).

On August 31st, 2021, iFunny[4] user AntiChildPr3datorChan uploaded a version of the meme that uses a thick Indian accent to say the catchphrase, a turban photoshopped onto the cat's head and Mundian To Bach Ke as the post-catchphrase sound off, earning 111 likes in 24 hours (shown below).
