About

OK Go Dancing X, also known as "Dancing Americans Series" (Japanese: アメリカ人に踊らせてみたシリーズ, America Jin Ni Odorasete Mita Series), refers to a style of mashup videos featuring music videos by an American rock band OK Go. A huge amount of videos in this series has been uploaded to the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) since 2009 because of its high flexibility to fit in any kind of music.

Origin

The main source footage for this mashup meme is OK Go's music video "A Million Ways"[1] which was originally premired in 2005 (shown below, left). Meanwhile, the earliest instance that made people notice its high flexibility was uploaded to NND on August 16th, 2007 (shown below, right). However, this originator featuring Yatta! hadn't been able to reach masses.

Spread

The first hit video in this series was a mashup of "A Million Ways" and a quite popular anime song "Hare Hare Yukai", which was uploaded on February 7th, 2009. The creator of this video Ichigo (一号)[2] continually posted this kind of mashups constantly, he succeeded to inspire many NND users by his videos with perfect consistency of OK Go's visuals and anime songs. Other NND user soon began mimicking this style of mashups by their favorite songs. By the help of its quite convenient editing style, Over 100 videos had been posted to NND in its first year, and its amount is still increasing continually.[3] In subsequent videos in this series, OK Go's another music video "Here It Goes Again"[4] has been utilized as well.

On the other hand, this mashup meme isn't able to live on YouTube since the copyright holder prohibits users publishing all of videos reusing the band's footages on that video sharing service.

Notable Examples
