Matty B
About
Matty B and MattyBRaps are the stage names of tween rapper Matthew David Morris, who gained much notoriety online with the launch of his YouTube channel in May 2010.
History
According to the Celebriki,[1] Morris became interested in hip hop music as a five year old and began making rap songs with his cousin Charles Manning (a.k.a. Mars).[2] On May 31st, 2010, the MattyBRaps YouTube channel was launched. In the first four years, the channel gained over 922 million video views and 2.37 million subscribers. The first video uploaded to the channel featured Matty B's cover of the 2010 dance pop song "Eenie Meenie" by Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston (shown below).
In late 2011, a death hoax began circulating that Matty B had died in a car accident. On May 9th, 2012, Matty B uploaded a cover of the song "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen to YouTube, which received upwards of 93.6 million views and 85,000 comments in the next two years (re-upload shown below).
MattyB's World
On March 27th, 2014, Matty B released the first episode of the reality web series MattyB's World, in which he talks his father into letting him perform a revised cover of the song "Talk Dirty" by Jason Derulo with singer Chloe Channell (shown below).
"Hide Your Girlfriend" Tweet
On April 29th, 2017, Matty B tweeted[4] a picture of himself captioned "Hide your girlfriend… I'm headed out for the day." The tweet gained nearly 60,000 retweets and 100,000 likes.
Shortly after Matty B's tweet, Twitter user @Zrowable[5] tweeted a screenshot of the tweet along with a screenshot he had with his girlfriend begging her to not leave the house. That tweet gained nearly 200,000 retweets and 488,000 likes.
This inspired several imitation tweets. The most popular, by @jackdwagner,[6] showed him putting his girlfriend in a closet to "protect" her from Matty B. This tweet gained nearly 50,000 retweets (shown below, left). Others turned Matty B's caption into a meme they paired with various pictures of unattractive people (shown below, middle and right). The moment was covered by Buzzfeed.[7]
Reputation
Many of Matty B's videos have a high number of dislikes and negative YouTube comments. On June 6th, 2014, The Daily Dot[3] published an article about the child singer, which noted the significant backlash many of Matty B's uploads had received.
