About

Maxime Bernier is a Quebec-born Canadian politician, the current leader of the People's Party of Canada[1], and a former member of the Conservative Party of Canada. He bacame well-known for his comments about milticulturalism and for his founding of a new political party.

Early Career

Maxime spent his early career as a minister withing the Conservative party, serving in Industry and Foreign Affairs[2]. Later on he served as a Backbencher in Parliment and then the Minister of State. He was one of the major politicians pushing for a more libertarian position in Canadian politics. All of this was under the term of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. However, once Harper lost the election to Justin Trudeau (the current Prime Minister), Maxime later played a role in the Opposition[2].

Comments about Multiculturalism

In August of 2018, Maxime made a series of Twitter posts criricizing Multiculturalism, claiming that it will bring 'distrust, social conflict, and potentially violence' and called to 'reverse this trend'[3]. Many Conservative MPs criticized these tweets, such as Brock Harrison saying that "Conservatives will continue to recognize and celebrate the contributions made to Canada from people from diverse backgrounds", and Lisa MacLeod claiming to have never sympathized with Bernier[3]. This later sparked a controversey surrounding Bernier and Canadian diversity.

People's Party of Canada

In late August, Maxime resigned from the Conservative party, announcing that he may launch his own political party. In September, Maxime founded a new political party: the People's Party of Canada. The party runs on a platform of conservatism, economic liberalization and civic nationalism[4]. While the People's Party currently only has one (out of three hundred and thirty-eight) seats on the House of Commons, polls have found that 17% of Canadians are willing to support People's[5].

"Mad Max" Bernier

Several Canadians, both for and against Maxime Bernier, have given him the nickname "Mad Max", referencing both is given name and the movie franchize of the same name. This nickname had been used by Canadian journalists[6][7] and users of the conservative subreddit r/metacanada[8][9].
