About

MC Mental was an alias used by British MC Graham Patterson, also known as MC Little Patter. He was known online for his skilled MCing and the viral song "MC Mental @ His Best." In October 2020, he passed away from an unknown cause.

Identity

There have been at least three British MCs who have used the name MC Mental. The first is Col French,[1] based out of Liverpool,[2] who has been using[3] the moniker since the late 1990s. The second, and this entry's subject, Graham Patterson, started using the name sometime in or before 2007. Based out of Newcastle upon Tyne, he later used other names including MC Little Patter, Little Patter, Little Patter MC, and Patt$y. In 2009, a third unidentified male MC began[4][5][6] performing as MC Mental.

Online History

The first online glimpse of Patterson comes from a June 15th, 2007 YouTube video[7] of him MCing as MC Mental (shown below, left). The video was made and uploaded by YouTube user Micky C. The video's ending shows a picture of Micky C with Patterson. More videos of Patterson's MCing were uploaded throughout the late 2000s. One of his most popular songs, "Chav Dance," was posted[8] on September 1st, 2007. It reached over 500,000 views in 13 years. On November 8th, 2015, YouTuber Andyholm uploaded[9] a lyric video for Chav Dance that received over 1.3 million views in 5 years (shown below, right).

On May 30th, 2013, a YouTube video was uploaded[10][11] by user Joel Cochrane showing Patterson MCing as Little Patter MC while driving (shown below). In 7 years, it received over 27,000 views.

Online Presence

Many of Patterson's performances were uploaded by other people. He created[12] a YouTube account, p4tt3rs0n, on February 22nd, 2007. It has more than 800 subscribers and upwards of 600,000 views. A YouTube playlist[13] of MC Mental performances by user Edc4 contains over 60 videos of Patterson, but some of the videos feature other MC Mentals instead of Patterson. Patterson was most active on Facebook,[14] where his account has over 1,200 followers. In October 2011, he created[15] a Twitter account, @LittlePatterr. In 2014, Patterson made a SoundCloud account[16] where he published 6 tracks and gained more than 3,200 followers.

Reputation

Online, Patterson is known for his fast MCing consisting of words mixed with random sounds. His most popular work is "MC Mental @ His Best," which is sometimes associated with the English chav stereotype.

Style

The broader music genre Patterson's MCing belongs to is known as Makina. Originating in Spain, the genre was popularized in North East England during the late 90s and early 2000s, particularly at The New Monkey nightclub in Sunderland.[17][18] North East England Makina is characterized by rapid vocals over fast-paced techno/dance music.[17][19]
