Neil Breen is an American filmmaker and actor known for his series of low-budget, self-produced and self-directed films that have gained a cult following, similar to the Tommy Wiseau film The Room. He put out his first film, Double Down in 2005 and received a significant boost in attention in 2016 after Youtubers such as Red Letter Media and YourMovieSucks did reviews of his films.

History

Neil Breen began pursuing filmmaking in 2005 and put out his first film, Double Down, the same year.[1] He would later follow up with his second film titled I Am Here….Now on July 29th, 2011,[2] his third film Fateful Findings on May 25th, 2013,[3] Pass-Thru on April 19th, 2016,[4] Twisted Pair in 2018 and Cade: The Tortured Crossing in 2023. All of his films have received mixed to negative reviews on IMDb.

Cade: The Tortured Crossing

Cade: The Tortured Crossing is an independent science fiction psychological thriller film directed, produced, scored, edited and written by Neil Breen. The movie gained an ironic fandom in early August 2023, with memes and movie screening applause videos being shared on TikTok and Twitter (X) over the following weeks.

Online, the screening of the film became a trending topic in July 2023, especially the end credits, which featured mostly Neil Breen's name for several roles in the movie's production. For example, on July 15th, 2023, TiKTok user @michaelsnowenjoyer posted a video showing people applauding the end credits and booing every time a name other than Breen showed up on the screen. The post (shown below, left) garnered over 3 million plays and 527,000 likes in three months.

Online Relevance

On December 3rd, 2015, Red Letter Media uploaded a video as part of their Best of the Worst series discussing Neil Breen's film Double Down, accumulating over 2.5 million views in eight years (shown below).



On June 3rd, 2016, YouTuber YourMovieSucks uploaded a review of Breen's third film Fateful Findings, where he describes watching it as "one of the most magical film experiences of my entire life," garnering over 1.8 million views in seven years (shown below, left). The same day, he uploaded a fake infomercial skit from the review which garnered over 203,000 views (shown below, right).



Personal Life

Neil Breen was born on November 23rd, 1958. Along with filmmaking, he also worked as an architect and briefly as a real estate agent before pursuing filmmaking. It was through his work as an architect that he got the money for his films. As of writing, very little is known about Neil's personal life due to identity issues and the like according to an interview with Cinedelphia.[5]
