Pertamax is an internet slang term in the Indonesia internet community that is often use to mark on posts that hasn't be commented yet, similar to that of First comments on English speaking websites. The practice is often accompanied by image macros that are used as a means of shitposting.

Etymology

The word Pertamax derives from the word "Pertama" and "X". "Pertama" in Indonesian is translated as "first" while "X" or "kali" is translated as "times". When combined, the word Pertamax can be translated as "first time." The word Pertamax also originated from an Indonesian developed gasoline brand of the same name^[1].

Origin

The term "Pertamax" was believed to be coined by Ilham, owner of the now defunct KafeMotor, a popular blog site that focuses on motorcycles. The term was used on the site as early as 2007^[2].

Spread

The term was later popularize by the Indonesian Forum website Kaskus^[3] around early 2007. On July 14th, 2009, Urban Dictionary user rextintorz submitted an entry regarding the term^[4]. On August 16th, 2010, the term was submitted to Kitab Gaul (an Indonesian dictionary site similar to Urban Dictionary)^[5].
The practice of using image macros on Pertamax posting can be traced back as early as 2008 on Kaskus. Several Indonesian Blog sites have published articles about the various Pertamax images that have accumulated over the years^[6][7][8][9].
On June 10th, 2010, Youtube user sman2ks uploaded a video titled "Hitler Ngotot Pertamax Di Kaskus" which is a Hitler Reacts video regarding Pertamax posting. The video has since accumulated over 24.000 views over the course of more than 4 years.
