About
PizzaCakeComic is the name of a webcomic artist who creates and posts relatable comics about her and her family's everyday life. Starting from around the end of 2021 to the beginning of 2022, the comic series went viral on the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit, where a surge of users began making and posting satirical edits of her original comics that were used as exploitables.
Origin
On June 26th, 2021, PizzaCakeComic made her debut by posting a comic[1] about staying optimistic during the COVID-19 lockdown on her Tumblr-designed website, pizzacakecomic.com (shown below). The comic received 27 likes and reblogs in one year.
However, it wasn't until September 7th, 2021, that she made her debut on Reddit[2] by posting a comic highlighting a particular daily struggle of owning a cat (shown below), which received over 1,800 upvotes on the /r/comics subreddit.
From September to November 2021, PizzaCakeComic's webcomics mostly stayed within the territory of the /r/comics subreddit. On November 23rd, 2021, Redditor [3] u/euratowel posted the earliest known edit of one of her comics to the /r/bonehurtingjuice subreddit, where it received over 9,300 upvotes in eight months (shown below).
Spread
In the next few months, edits of PizzaCakeComic's webcomics were occasionally posted on the /r/bonehurtingjuice subreddit. On December 20th, 2021, Redditor[4] u/Lactose_and_Lecithin posted the earliest known edit of one of her comics to the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit, where it received 1,400 upvotes in seven months (shown below).
Over January 2022, edits of PizzaCakeComic's webcomics started gaining momentum on the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit. On January 23rd, 2022, Redditor[5] u/Alamasag posted an edit of one of her comics referencing Hitler not getting accepted into art school as the main punchline, on the basis of the focus on PizzaCakeComic's former artistic prospects in the original comic. It received over 9,500 upvotes in six months and was accepted on the "Hall of Fame" page on /r/ComedyNecrophilia. (shown below)
After this edit, PizzaCakeComic herself became aware of these edits, and, surprisingly to most of the users on the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit, found humor in them and embraced them as part of her fanbase. On January 24th, 2022, after becoming aware of her comics being ironically edited on /r/ComedyNecrophilia, PizzaCakeComic[6] posted a webcomic in her usual drawing style on /r/comics in which the humor stemmed from her exaggerated reactions to realizing that her posts have been used as editing material on /r/ComedyNecrophilia (shown below). It received over 4,000 upvotes as well as a gold award over the past six months.
On January 26th, PizzaCakeComic[7] posted an edit of one of her own comics in /r/comedynecrophilia and received overwhelming and unironic positive feedback, as well as over 9,400 upvotes and a platinum award over the following six months (shown below). Many people in the comments have mentioned how it was particularly notable in that this was most likely the first time someone whose original posts were edited was introduced to /r/ComedyNecrophilia and embraced those edits.
On February 13th, 2022, PizzaCakeComic[8] posted a second edit of one of her own comics to the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit and received over 15,500 upvotes and three gold awards in five months (shown below). Like her first post on /r/ComedyNecrophilia, it also received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Over the next several months, although PizzaCakeComic seemed to take a hiatus from posting on the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit, she continued posting her usual comics about life with her family and her cats on /r/comics and /r/funny, and those comics continued to spawn regular edits on the /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit. The explosive peak of these edits was from January to February 2022, and although they saw some decline after those two months, edits of her webcomics still often appeared on /r/ComedyNecrophilia as of July 2022.
