Please Commit Seppuku by Sunset Tomorrow is a reaction image featuring the character Kashigi Yabushige (portrayed by actor Tadanobu Asano) from the Shogun historical drama series. Starting in June 2024, the image has been used to express a strong dislike towards someone.
Origin
On April 23rd, 2024, episode 10 "A Dream of a Dream" of the historical drama series Shogun premiered.[1] In one scene of the episode, the protagonist Lord Toranaga commands his vassal Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) to commit seppuku, an honorable form of taking one's life by stabbing oneself in the abdomen, by sunset the following day (scene shown below).
Please commit seppuku by sunset tomorrow.
On May 14th, X[2] user @fab__david posted the earliest found meme that used a still image from the scene as a reaction, a football meme that didn't gain significant traction.
On June 19th, 2024, X[3] user @saywhatagain posted a screencap from the scene, commenting that the series was "a font of great potential reaction images." The post (shown below) garnered over 100 reposts and 3,400 likes in one week.
Spread
On June 22nd, 2024, X[4] user @devincf quoted the post reading "marketers & publicists, if you had to advise Drake on a rebrand, what would it be?" with the reaction image. The quote post (shown below) received over 12,000 reposts and 134,000 likes in four days.
Following the post, the reaction image saw spread on X, Instagram and other sites. For example, on June 23rd, 2024, X[5] user @grandpabbychuck posted a caption meme that received over 50 reposts and 110 likes in three days (shown below, left). On June 24th, Instagram[6] user wookwars posted a meme that received over 650 likes in two days (shown below, right).
