The quote has been used in various memes where the line is attributed to different characters across media. The phrase is a play on words reinterpreting the phrase "Hold the fuck up," usually used to mean "Wait a minute," as "Hold the fuck-up," meaning "embrace the messy person."

Origin

On June 2nd, 2016, Tumblr user acchronychal^[1] (formerly maria--reynolds^[2]) posted the following quote (shown below). The post received over 256,000 reblogs, and over 161,000 likes in over six years.

“Hold the fuck up.” I say. I am the fuck up. Please hold me.

The phrase was later used in 2019 to edit the speech bubbles of a page of the manga Rent-a-Girlfriend (shown below), which saw numerous reposts on sites such as Reddit.^[3][4][5]

Spread

Over the following years, the catchphrase spread in memes where artists and posters attributed the line to other characters. For example, on January 24th, 2021, Redditor Side-Character-A posted a Danganronpa edit to the game's subreddit,^[7] gaining over 2,000 points (shown below, left). On September 10th, 2021, Twitter user @partylikeart^[6] posted art with the phrase attributed to Derpy Hooves, gaining over 130 retweets and 600 likes in one year (shown below, right).
