About
Pop The Balloon Or Find Love refers to a popular dating show format in which a contestant is brought out to face a line of singles, each one holding a red balloon that they have to keep. If the singles don't like what they see, they are free to pop. Content creators have used the format since August 2022 but YouTuber Arlette Amuli's "Pop The Balloon Or Find Love" amassed great popularity on YouTube and TikTok since its debut in December 2023. Several clips featuring people being rejected have gone viral on social media, sparking memes and jokes related to the trend.
Origin
One of the earliest known content using the "pop the balloon" trend was posted by YouTuber[1] FOK on August 20th, 2022, in a video titled "Take me out!" which featured six single women holding a red balloon while Fox tries to find a date. The ones that aren't in him have to pop their balloons and sometimes explain why they rejected the YouTuber. The video (seen below, left) amassed over 761,000 views and 18,000 likes in two years.
On December 7th, 2023, YouTuber[2] Arlette Amuli uploaded the first episode of her series "Pop The Balloon Or Find Love" (seen below, right), which featured singles from all across Phoenix, Arizona trying to find a match. The video amassed more than 1.9 million views and 28,000 likes in nine months.
Spread
The format grew popular among YouTubers and content creators, sparking numerous versions and comedy skits parodying the dating show. For example, on June 13th, 2024, YouTuber[3] @officialkeewon posted a video titled "Pop The Least Attractive Person's Balloon Or Find Love!" which amassed over 80,000 views and 1,300 likes in two months.
A particular participant from @officialkeewon's video became the subject of jokes and memes on social media after being immediately rejected by almost all the singles holding balloons. X[4] page @allreactionvids posted the clip (seen below) on June 28th, 2024, amassing more than 169,000 views and 2,800 likes in two months.
