The Ranking Filter, also known as the Tournament Bracket Filter, is a visual effect on TikTok that makes the user decide on the best movies, TV shows, music albums and more in the form of a tournament bracket. The filter became widespread in January 2023 on TikTok.

Origin

On January 23rd, 2023, TikTok^[1] user @allangregorio created the "Anime Battle" filter (below, left),^[2] in which the user has to decide what their favorite character is based on a random tournament bracket. The filter's popularity reached 45,800 videos uploaded in less than a month on the platform. This inspired the creation of the "Movie vs Movie" filter (below, right) on February 1st, 2023, which garnered 407,900 videos using the tool in less than a week.^[3]

Spread

In early 2023, the "Movie vs Movie" filter started to be used en masse by TikTokers. On February 1st, 2023, TikTok^[4] user @leslieknopesdaughter posted a video that earned roughly 925,900 plays in one week (shown below, left). On the same day, TikTok^[5] user @josiahsmethfilms posted a similar video, earning roughly 11,700 plays in one week (shown below, right).

Series vs Series Filter

On February 6th, 2023, TikTok^[6] user @allangregorio followed a user request and created the filter "Series vs Series" which features several TV shows for people to decide between via the tournament brackets. His post using the feature gained 1.6 million plays (seen below) and the filter had 144,400 videos uploaded on the platform in four days.

Albums vs Albums Filter

The latest edition of the filter was uploaded on February 8th, 2023, also by @allangregorio on TikTok^[7]. The "Album vs Album" filter features several music albums in the tournament brackets. TikTok user ^[8] @alonelyvince (below, left) shared a video using the feature on the same day, garnering 230,100 plays in two days. TikTok^[9] user @.chlo333_ also joined the trend on February 9th, 2023, receiving 76,400 plays in one day (below, right).
