About:

/r/arabfunny is a subreddit created in 2018 to host ironic and poorly-edited memes that parody memes sent by Arab users over social media. The purpose of the subreddit is to create satirical versions of these types of memes to such a degree that the irony is obvious and to use an excessive amount of Arabic text and random images that mirror clickbait memes with lots of irrelevant GIFs, arrows and emojis. Memes featured on the subreddit often take the form of random viral clips or feature image macros bearing similarities to those found in communities like /r/OKBuddyRetard and /r/DeepFriedMemes.

History

On November 26, 2018, Redditor Ibrajew launched the subreddit /r/arabfunny.[1] The origin of /r/arabfunny stems from Reddit, and appears to have influences from poorly made Arabic memes shared on the internet, primarily those of WhatsApp and Facebook. The meme may also have origins on YouTube and Instagram, as people parody Arabic posts there as well.

About two weeks later, an unknown Redditor posted one of the earliest memes to showcases the style and format of the subreddit. The post, a Rage Comic covered by numerous other memes and images, received more than 8,200 points (100% upvoted) and 220 comments in less than two years (shown below).

Within two years, the group amassed more than 210,000 subscribers.
