"Reply To This Tweet" Trolls refers to a series of tweets in which people take advantage of a recent feature Twitter introduced which allows people to limit the people able to reply to a tweet to only the people mentioned in said tweet. This resulted in people taking advantage of the feature with tweets promising something good to all who reply but making it so that nobody could reply to the tweet.
Origin
On May 20th, 2020, Twitter introduced a new feature where one could limit the replies to their own tweets such that only people mentioned in a tweet could reply to it.[1] They first introduced the feature to a small percentage of users.
Spread
Shortly after the feature was introduced, Twitter users who were able to use it quickly began to make jokes with it by posting inflammatory statements or encouraging users to reply to them with money or gifts and limiting the replies. For example, Lil Nas X posted a tweet reading, "FEELING GENEROUS❤️ SENDING EVERYBODY WHO REPLIES TO THIS $100 ❤️❤️",[3] gaining over 192,000 likes (shown below, left). Twitter[3] itself posted a tweet saying "Reply if there’s a better app," gaining over 85,000 retweets and 148,000 likes (shown below, right). Jokes about the feature were covered by StayHipp[4] and The Verge.[5]
