About
ResidentSleeper is a Twitch emote showing a close-up of streamer Oddler asleep. The emote is used to display boredom in Twitch chats and was added early on to the platform in late 2012.
Origin
On September 29th, 2012, Twitch streamer Oddler fell asleep in hour 66 of his 72-hour marathon stream of Resident Evil Biohazard (shown below). It was his third try at doing a 72-hour marathon, as well as his last attempt. The emote depicts a close-up shot of only Oddler's head after he began sleeping with his mouth slightly open and his eyes closed.
The moment from the stream became an emote due to the votes of the Twitch community in 2012, as neither Twitch staff nor Oddler submitted the emote for consideration.[1]
Spread
ResidentSleeper became a prominent emote to express boredom among Twitch chat during streams over the following decade. The emote was briefly removed in 2016 due to a Twitch cleanse of low-poly emotes,[2] but was ultimately resubmitted. Notably, streamer AdmiralBulldog banned the use of the emote after his chat used it to express disappointment in his PUBG play in 2017.[3]
On April 12th, 2018, a definition for the emote was added to Urban Dictionary by user John Wick Poggers[4] (shown below), receiving over 220 likes in roughly two years and becoming the top definition for the term.
