Right-Hook Dog

The Right-Hook Dog (Japanese: 右フック犬, Migi Fukku Inu), also called as "Macho Dog" (ムキムキ犬, Muki-Muki Inu), refers to a picture of a dog looking like giving a right hook punch. In April 2019, the picture was trending among Japanese Twitter users.

Origin

On April 15th, 2019, Twitter user @Ninjamaaaaaan (だて虚無) posted a picture of an excited shiba in his family house.^[1] As the picture was blurred, it looked like the dog gave a punch by huge right arm. This tweet had earned 36,000 retweets and more than 100,000 likes within its first 3 days.

Spread

That picture soon became to be called "The Right-Hook Dog" or "The Macho Dog" or "Muki-Muki Shiba Inu", and received illustrations and photoshopped images from people inspired by it.^[2] For example, art by @daromeon gained over 6,000 retweets and 22,000 likes (shown below, left). A tweet by @Harpuia_tomo gained over 3,400 retweets and 11,400 likes (shown below, right).

Others drew the character as a moe girl. For example, NicoVideo user Katsushi Ishigami posted such art (shown below, left), as did user flash-san (shown below, right).

The right-hook dog's popularity on Twitter was soon covered by Japanese online news media, including ITmedia Netlab^[3] and J-town.^[4]

Muscle Fox

On April 17th, 2019, Twitter user @fox_info_net^[5] posted a picture of two foxes cuddling next to each other. Due to the angle of the photograph, it appears as though it is one fox with huge biceps. They posted art illustrating the concept (shown below). The tweet gained over 56,000 retweets and 130,000 likes.

This led to a humorous rivalry between Right-Hook Dog and Muscle Fox, as multiple pieces of fan art were created depicting the two of them in conflict. For example, Phachandam posted art of the two fighting on Screeneggs (shown below, left). Another post showing the two preparing to fight appeared in /r/funny, gaining over 64,000 points (shown below, right).
