Say Hi, Bern refers to a video of a person in a blue plaid robe who is requested to say hi and does so in a timid manner. The video gained initial spread in edits on Instagram in early January 2019, and later saw another surge in popularity in late July 2019.

Origin

The exact origin of the video is unknown. On December 27th, YouTube user Meme Dragon reuploaded a video of an individual named Bern, dressed in a plaid robe and standing in front of a hospital, saying hi in a response to a request to do so (shown below).^[1] In the following days, more uploads of the video were made by other YouTube users.

On January 1st, Instagram user nova_xeno posted the earliest known notable edit of the video which gained over 452,700 views in seven months (shown below).^[2]

In the following days, multiple users on Instagram and YouTube posted more edits of the video, with the word "hi" replaced with various sounds, including notable versions by Instagram users iwillstealallthedankmemes^[3] and professorpumpp (examples shown below).^[4]

Starting in mid-July 2019, the video regained popularity on the platform, with notable early edits of that period made by users realstiffy^[5] and startup.mp4^[6] on July 18th and July 21st, respectively. In the following days, more users posted versions of the meme, including posts by zetaxp,^[7] professionalretard.mp4^[8] and nitro.if.^[9]
