About

Us In Another Universe refers to a trend on TikTok, among other sites, in which creators pair the catchphrase "Us in another universe" with videos and images of cute animals like cats, dogs and frogs that look like couples. The wholesome phrase references the concept of alternate universes or parallel universes. The trend started in late 2023, spreading on TikTok when commonly paired with actor Michael Cera's cover of the song "Clay Pigeons" by American country singer Blaze Foley.

Origin

Despite non-viral usage of the phrase "Us in another universe" surfacing on Twitter / X[1] earlier than October 2023, the phrase didn't become a viral meme until October 2023.

The trend started with three videos posted to TikTok[2][3][4] on October 21st, 2023, the most viral of which was posted by TikToker[2] @zandingle69 which received roughly 5.1 million plays and 1.4 million likes in five days (shown below, left). Another video was posted by TikToker[3] @._nick05, gaining roughly 3.5 million plays and 889,100 likes in five days (shown below, right). Both videos used Michael Cera's cover[5] of the song "Clay Pigeons" by Blaze Foley.[6]

Spread

In the days that followed the original videos, many on TikTok posted videos with the "Clay Pigeons" sound,[7] using the "Us in another universe" phrase for cute animal videos. For instance, on October 22nd, 2023, TikToker[8] @grandmothergracie posted an iteration, gaining roughly 3.1 million plays and 906,500 likes in four days (shown below, left). Also on October 22nd, TikToker[9] @chevy.blazer posted an iteration, gaining roughly 2.5 million plays and 647,300 likes in four days (shown below, right).
