She Looks So Lovable, continued "What Anime?" or "What Sauce?," refers to a viral 2017 comment by Facebook user Timothy Warner asking what anime the character Astolfo from Fate/Apocrypha is from, mistaking him for a female. A screenshot of the exchange went viral in the years following as an exploitable, with users replacing the image associated with the comments to change the context.
On July 20th, 2017, Facebook page "Unlimited Moe Works" posted an image of Astolfo from Fate/Apocrypha, originally posted to Tumblr. On that day, Facebook user Timothy Warner commented, "She looks so lovable, what anine?" misspelling "anime." Warner is then told by another user that the character is a male, revealing the image to be a trap, to which Warner repeats the word "no" a number of times (shown below).
Over the course of the year, people began using a screenshot of the exchange as an exploitable, usually replacing the image of Astolfo with another trap character (examples shown below, left and right). Many of these were posted to private Facebook pages. Some users edit the last line of text to read "what sauce" instead of "what anine," with others erasing the "what anine" line altogether.
The format increased in popularity over the course of 2020, particularly on Facebook and iFunny. On August 24th, 2020, Facebook page "Ꭾｓｙｃｈｏｔａｋｕサイコ" posted a new version of the meme using an image from the anime Skirt no Naka wa Kedamono Deshita, garnering over 1,300 reactions and 300 shares in nine months (shown below).
