She Wasn't Lying, That Ass Can Fart refers to a catchphrase often used in ironic Brap -themed image macros depicting various characters either feeling a powerful gust of air or having something smudged over their face. Originating from a viral Reddit post, the format saw viral spread in September 2020. Additionally, starting in late October 2020, the phrase gained popularity as the X Wasn't Lying, That Y Can Z snowclone.

Origin

On June 5th, 2020, Redditor MuhCarbs posted a still image from Dragon Ball series with a viral fan-art of naked squatting Broly edited as if he is emitting an energy beam from his buttocks, captioned "Damn he wasn't lying, that ass can fart." The post received over 10,700 upvotes /r/okbuddyretard[1] in five months (shown below).

The image received viral spread online with multiple reposts in the following months. For example, a June 23rd, 2020, repost by Instagram[2] user the_maymays_reloaded received over 5,000 likes in four months. A July 27th repost in /r/boottoobig[3] subreddit accumulated over 12,800 upvotes.

On July 17th, 2020, Twitter[4] user @Bardock29809671 posted the earliest derivative of the meme by creating a video version (shown below). The post received over 1,200 views in three months, while an October 7th, 2020, repost by Instagram[5] user lilmotherfigure gained over 55,900 views in one week.

The format did not see notable spread until September 9th, 2020, when Redditor Skatchuu posted an image of Yellow M&M covered in chocolate captioned with the phrase. The post received over 12,200 upvotes in /r/okbuddyretard[6] in one month (shown below).

Following the viral spread of the image in the following days, the catchphrase gained moderate popularity in memes depicting various characters having something smudged all over their face.

That X Wasn't Lying, That Y Can Z

On September 19th, 2020, Redditor[7] xKylesx posted a photograph of a Collie dog in the wind to the /r/photoshopbattles subreddit, where it gained over 19,200 upvotes (shown below, left). On September 20th, iFunny[8] user Hackers captioned the image with the phrase (shown below, right).

In the following weeks, the captioned gained popularity as a snowclone, with users altering the image accordingly.
