Shouldn't Have Bought X In The UK, also known as Royal Period Of Mourning is a meme in which users put the image of Queen Elizabeth II on their electronic devices along with a message stating that their device cannot be used during the royal mourning period. This meme is modeled after the actual mourning period for the Queen shutting down actual planned programming on several UK Television and Radio programmes.
Origin
On September 10th, 2022, Twitter user Edcrab_[1] posted an image of their Steam Deck with a picture of Queen Elizabeth II along with "In Memoriam" and the years of her birth and death, earning over 16,000 likes in five days and providing the basic layout of the meme (shown below).
Spread
About two hours later, Twitter user stckfb[2] posted a tweet with the message "never buying a motherboard from amazon uk ever again what is this shit" along with picture of their computer monitor showing Queen Elizabeth II and her birth and death year, earning over 46,000 likes in five days (shown below).
On September 11th, 2022, Twitter user LucasIsPersonal[3] posted a Tweet stating "Shouldn't have bought a 2ds in the UK wtf is this", along with a picture of their Nintendo 2DS with Queen Elizabeth II on the screen along with the message "This device is unavailable during the Royal period of Mourning and will continue to be until Monday 19 September" receiving over 562,000 likes and over 41,000 retweets in four days (shown below).
