Deeptomcruise is a gimmick TikTok account that posts deepfakes of Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. The channel and its videos received viral popularity in February 2021, with the deepfakes recognized for being highly realistic.

History

On February 22nd, 2021, TikTok[1] account deeptomcruise was created. On the same day, the account posted a deepfake video where the face of Tom Cruise was applied over a clip of a person playing golf and talking to the camera (shown below).[2] The video received over 5.7 million views and 609,000 likes on TikTok in four days.

Features

Deeptomcruise posts videos in which the face of actor Tom Cruise is applied over clips of a person performing various actions communicating with the viewers. In the videos, a voice similar to the actor's is also used to further the effect (example videos shown below).[3][4]

On February 25th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @mckaywringley reposted a video from the account, writing "seeing is no longer believing," with the tweet gaining over 545,000 views, 3,600 retweets and 10,700 likes in one day (shown below).
