About

Digi, also referred to as the AI Girlfriend App, is an artificial intelligence chatbot that allows the user to design and romance a virtual companion. Launched in December 2023, the app sparked viral reactions and inspired reactions on social media.

History

On December 15th, 2023, Digi AI released version 1.0 of Digi, an artificial intelligence app in which users can design an animated AI companion to talk to and romance. Artificial intelligence generates companion's responses, which are then voiced with AI voice. [1]

On December 15th, Digi AI developer Andrew announced the release of the app on X[2] / Twitter, where it received over 13.7 million views, 5,400 reposts and 3,300 likes in two days (shown below).

Features

Digi is a chatbot in which the user is able to design a virtual companion based on their preferences and enter a romantic relationship with them. Companion's responses are generated in real-time with artificial intelligence, with an AI voice technology being used to voice the responses. The app features animated avatars created with involvement from ex-Pixar animators, with more features promised in the future.

Online Reactions

Following the announcement of Digi, the app sparked viral reactions and discussions on X / Twitter, earning comparisons with digital and robotic companions in various media.

For example, on December 15th, 2023, X[3] user @StormyAdlerPoG made a post in which they referenced episode Soos and the Real Girl of the Gravity Falls, writing that dating a digital woman was "a bad idea." the post (shown below, left) garnered over 1,100 reposts and 10,000 likes in three days.

Additionally, the announcement was followed by posts in which people imagined various unusual interactions with their AI companions. For example, on December 16th, 2023, X[4] user @AltHistCody made a post imagining possible results of overly explaining Warhammer 40,000 lore. The post received over 830 reposts and 10,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). Later on the same day, YouTuber
Cr1TiKaL made a joke about getting pegged by the AI that received over 2,600 reposts and 49,000 likes on X[5] in two days (shown below, right).

Replika AI

Replika AI is an artificial intelligence chatbot that's designed to become a user's friend and even replicate them after they die so that loved ones can still "chat" with them. It was founded in early 2017 by a Russian-American programmer and it's run on a mobile application on Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR). Since its launch date in March 2017, Replika has been referenced in memes and videos on YouTube and TikTok where creators upload reactions and screen-record their intimate Replika conversations with the bot.

The loneliness epidemic and its consequences have been disastrous for the human race. We've despaired the issue to the point that we no longer seek to meaningfully resolve it, and we are endlessly assailed by opportunistic vultures seeking to sell us the most pitiful surrogates.

I don't really buy into many of the Hollywood-inspired sensationalist scenarios of a piece of technology causing huge disaster, but with this one its really hard not to see it going really badly, especially when you get a depiction like the film Her where its done so convincingly, and starts from a place of people thinking that dating a computer simulation is weird and something you wouldn't others to know about you (like people do in real life), and then gradually becoming a thing that is normalised.

Maybe that never happens, and even if it's somewhat popular it stays as a weird niche thing rather than something mainstream and socially acceptable, but it's easy to at least picture a world in which it becomes more widespread. Young people are having an increasingly difficult time forming actual relationships, and even for people who do have them, they can be exhausting because you're dealing with a real person who has their own goals and flaws and who you will inevitably have arguments with, instead of just your own Marylin Monrobot who will always tell you you're amazing and do what you want, so people can choose to just check out on those and do this instead.
